City leaders are working with the Border Patrol to tackle the issue of eradicating the carrizo cane along the river.
Officials say the thick carrizo cane that grows along the riverbanks is an easy hiding place for drug smugglers and illegal immigrants.
The Border Patrol wants to eradicate the carrizo cane, but environmentalists voiced their concerns after reviewing some of the methods they felt would be too harsh.
The city council is expected to hear an update at tonight's City Council meeting.
