GALVESTON — Sheriff’s office deputies are investigating the death of a man who apparently hung himself from a shower inside the Galveston County jail.
Juan Esteban Batentzun, 18, of Webster, was arrested in League City on Aug. 1 for charges of resisting arrest, criminal mischief and escape from custody and transported to the county jail. Immigration officials had also placed an immigration hold on him.
Batentzun was found hanging from a blanket tied around the cell’s shower Sunday night. He was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
